Growing forestry knowledge in Tasmanian schools
The Rockliff Liberal Government is the strongest supporter of our sustainably managed forests and pleased that this knowledge is now being shared with Tasmanian students.
Schools Tree Day is part of the annual National Tree Day events which encourage Australians to give back to local communities by planting trees for the future.
“To support teachers and students in Tasmania, Sustainable Timber Tasmania and the Forest Education Foundation hosts school tree planting events and educational resources to about 40 participating schools,” Minister Ellis said.
“Fifteen of these schools also expressed interest in hosting foresters from STT to help plant trees and Spreyton Primary School, where we are today, has been involved for the past five years.
“STT’s Perth Nursery has carefully grown more than 3000 seedlings of native trees and shrubs species which have been gifted to Tasmanian schools for this year’s events.
“During these events, multiple classes participate in planting of seedlings from STT’s Perth nursery and enjoy forest learning activities with teachers from the Forest Education Foundation.
“These activities are an ideal opportunity to educate students about the importance of trees and forests and how to care for plants during various phases of their growth.
“I thank STT and the Forest Education Foundation for their commitment and effort in sharing our story of sustainable forestry with the next generation of Tasmanians,” Minister Ellis said.
Schools Tree Day complements National Tree Day which was held on July 30.
