A step closer to pumping the brakes on Hoons

The Police Offences Amendment Bill 2025 has passed the House of Assembly, marking another major step in the Tasmanian Government’s crackdown on hooning. 
 
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said this is another huge step in saving lives and protecting the community from those that feel they’re above the law.
 
“Everyday Tasmanians that do the right thing on our roads can have their lives changed in an instant by hooning and reckless drivers,” Minister Ellis said. 
 
“We’ve seen too many TikTok turkeys doing the wrong thing on our roads and encouraging others on social media – it’s dangerous, it’s reckless, and it’s not good enough.

“Road rage and unsafe driving behaviour places every single road user and often their loved ones at risk, and this behaviour is condemned in the strongest terms.

“We have listened to the community, we know how fed-up Tasmanians are with the idiots that drive recklessly, and we are delivering on our commitment to get these hoons off our roads. 

“I look forward to seeing this important Bill progress.” 

The Bill will also see increased penalties for dangerous and reckless driving, motor vehicle theft and create an offence of road rage.
