Delivering new police vessels for offshore capability

A new, state-of-the-art vessel will be added to the Tasmania Police Marine and Rescue Services fleet thanks to a commitment by the Rockliff Liberal Government.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said the new vessel will replace the PV Van Diemen in early 2024.

“A contract worth $13.4 million has been awarded to Fine Entry Marine to build an off-shore patrol vessel to replace the PV Van Diemen,” Minister Ellis said.

“The new Van Diemen vessel will be a 23.95m, monohull offshore patrol vessel capable of 30 knots and the ability to travel 200 nautical miles from our shores.

“The Tasmanian Liberal Government has provided $24.6 million for the three phase Large Vessel Replacement Program since 2014.

“Phases one and two are complete with the successful construction and commissioning of the $8.6 million PV Cape Wickham and the $3.6 million PV Dauntless.

“These vessels are significant and important investments for our marine police so they can undertake their duties to keep our waters safe and to enforce our marine and fisheries legislation.”
