Disappointment for our Police Offences Amendment

Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future is about keeping Tasmanians safe, and the Tasmanian Liberal Government has long supported removing the offence of begging from the Police Offences Act. 

During today’s debate, the Government moved a common-sense amendment which would have provided the right balance between removing an outdated offence, and ensuring Tasmania Police can continue to do their work protecting the community. 

Tasmania Police have been strong in their view that a move-on provision must be retained, so their officers can do their jobs – keep Tasmanians safe. 

It was extremely disappointing that during the debate Labor’s Jen Butler claimed, if passed, hardworking and professional Tasmania Police officers would use these provisions to target “knitting nannas”. 

Hyperbolic commentary from Labor that diminishes the incredibly important work of our officers does nothing to support our community. 

The Government remains willing to work collaboratively and in good faith on a move-on provision that meets the needs of all sides of the chamber.
