Emergency Services personnel recognised for service to Tasmania

More than 130 medals have been presented to Tasmania Fire Service and State Emergency Service staff and volunteers at a medal presentation in Launceston today.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said he was honoured to present medals to the recipients and to recognise the work they do to keep their communities safe.

“Our emergency services staff and volunteers are there for the community 24/7, usually when we are at our most vulnerable,” Minister Ellis said.

“The medals presented to those personnel today are deserving recognition of their incredible contribution to Tasmania.”

The National Medal for Service was presented to 29 people for diligent service over a period of 15 years.

There were 38 clasps awarded for service ranging from 25-55 years to the Tasmania Fire and Emergency Services.

A further 54 National Emergency Medals were presented for service during 2019-20 the NSW Bushfire Campaign. And four ACT Emergency Medals for contributions to the 2019-20 ACT fires.

“The 2019-20 bushfire season was the worst NSW and ACT has recorded. The fires were deemed a catastrophe,” Minister Ellis said.

“Our personnel were among those deployed from across Australia to assist in frontline as well as operational and support roles.”

In addition to those medals, seven personnel were presented with Chief Officer Commendations, one member was given a Humanitarian Overseas Medal and one 60 year Long Service Medal was also presented.

“All of our emergency services personnel, right across the state, give fantastic service to their communities," Minister Ellis said.

“The recognition of these people today is well deserved, and is an inspirational testament to their passion, experience and commitment to help others in Tasmania."

To support Tasmania’s emergency service volunteers, the 2023-24 State Budget includes $10 million over two years to upgrade volunteer facilities around Tasmania.

Further, the Tasmanian Government is progressing its commitment to reform emergency services in Tasmania into the Tasmania Fire and Emergency Service.

“My congratulations and heartfelt thanks and appreciation to these medal recipients and all of our TFS and SES personnel for their commitment to their local community,” Minister Ellis said.
