National Housing Agreement short-changes Tasmania
The Tasmanian Liberal Government will always fight for Tasmania’s fair share when it comes to investment into much-needed housing.
Minister for Housing and Planning, Felix Ellis, said the new National Housing Agreement short-changes Tasmania, noting that if Tasmania didn’t sign today the Commonwealth would have withdrawn even more funding from our state.
“The Federal Labor Government’s negotiation tactics have been disappointing, and as a result we are going to see reduced Federal funding for social housing to Tasmania.
“At a time when the Tasmanian Liberal Government is pulling out all stops to boost supply, the Federal Labor Government has let down Tasmanians, and indeed all states and territories, with the outcome of today’s deal.
“Our Government will always welcome an increase in homelessness support for our State, but under this agreement this funding comes at the expense of social housing funding,” Minister Ellis said.
“While we also acknowledge access to the Commonwealth’s Housing Support Program, eligibility for this program should never have been contingent on signing this agreement.”
“The Tasmanian Government is disappointed in this insufficient deal from the Federal Government, and also the style of negotiation that has been used during this process.”
“We will always stand up for Tasmanians, and we will continue our record investment into housing as a part of our 2030 Stronger Plan for Tasmania’s Future which will see 10,000 more social and affordable homes delivered by 2032.”
