New grants for higher-density homes faster!
The Tasmanian Government is supporting the construction of more homes across Tasmania through a new $10 million Density Incentive Grant Scheme.
The scheme will provide grants of $10,000 per dwelling for developers building eligible medium or high-density housing.
Minister for Housing, Planning and Consumer Affairs, Felix Ellis, said the grant scheme is a key part of the government’s strategy to increase housing supply and affordability.
“We’re providing direct support to progress shovel-ready projects across Tasmania,” Minister Ellis said.
“The Density Incentive Grant Scheme will encourage developers to bring forward quality developments that increase housing variety and choice.
“That means more opportunity for students, young couples and retirees to choose the right home for them.
“By encouraging higher-density developments, we are boosting housing supply and making the most of land near services and infrastructure.
“This delivers on our commitment in the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future to build more homes faster.”
The grants will be available to developments with a minimum of three new dwellings and up to a maximum of 50 dwellings in certain planning zones that support higher density in our communities.
Property Council of Australia's Tasmanian Executive Director, Rebecca Ellston, said the Property Council of Australia congratulates the Tasmanian Government for adopting the industry’s proposal for greater incentives to help density development stack up.
“Density dwellings and developers have been hit hard in recent years by a combination of factors and incentives will help in bringing greater housing options to the market,” Ms Ellston said.
“Increasing incentives has been proven to support the feasibility of new housing projects, which in turn unlocks further development and assists in Tasmanian reaching its housing targets.”
The program will open for applications shortly after the release of the program guidelines.
