Online fire permits to support fuel reduction burning
The first stage of the Tasmanian Government’s new online fire permit system is now complete, allowing Tasmanians to apply online for fire permits and register their intention to burn.
Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis said this critical step in transitioning the fire permit system to a simpler and more efficient online service is improving fire safety across Tasmania.
“Fuel reduction burns save lives and the new online fire permit system is making it easier than ever to obtain a fire permit and register a burn,” Minister Ellis said.
“By creating a smoother process and providing our farmers and rural landowners with options for registering their burns, we’re aiming to reduce the number of unnecessary call outs for our firefighters.
“Under this government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re backing in our fire and emergency services to keep communities safe with initiatives like the online fire permit system,” he said.
Tasmanians conducting burns in the coming months are encouraged to register their burns and keep surrounding property owners in the loop.
“It’s a great time of year to make your property summer-safe. I encourage all landowners planning a burn to be responsible, well equipped, and make sure you have a chat to the neighbours before starting your burn,” Minister Ellis said.
The new permit portal has been delivered as a part of the Tasmanian Government’s $9 million a year investment into fuel reduction activities, complementing our nation-leading fuel-reduction program.
The first stage of the digital system is now available to the public via the Tasmania Fire Service website www.fire.tas.gov.au in preparation for this year’s fire season.
