New Recruit Course to further boost Tasmania Police numbers

The Rockliff Liberal Government is continuing to boost police numbers with record numbers of new constables graduating this year and another course for recruits starting today at the Tasmania Police Academy.

Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Management, Felix Ellis, said there have never been more police in Tasmania than there are today and he welcomed the new inductees to the third Recruit Course of 2023.

“These nine women and 15 men will undergo a rigorous 31-week training program to graduate as constables in May 2024,” Minister Ellis said.

“As part of our long-term plan, the Tasmanian Liberal Government has invested more than $730 million in additional funding into Tasmania Police since 2014 and is committed to increasing police numbers to 1454 by July 2026. We are well and truly on track to achieve this goal,” Minister Ellis said.

“With extra police we have been able to establish a Crime and Intelligence Command, a Family and Sexual Violence Command, a Road Policing Service, and we have more police on our street completing covert and overt patrols.

“We are also delivering on a full-time Special Operations Group, additional police to work in our new Arch Centres and more police to protect our children.

“We wish our new recruits good luck and I encourage other Tasmanians to consider this as a fantastic career option and a great way to protect and contribute to your community,” Minister Ellis said.
