Supercharging social housing maintenance

The Tasmanian Government is supercharging upgrades to social housing with an additional $20 million to improve and maintain homes.

In the 2024-25 Budget, the Tasmanian Government committed an additional $20 million over the next four years to maintain social homes across Tasmania - over and above the existing investment on maintenance.

Maintenance works are completed on properties prior to tenanting, ensuring they are safe, secure, and clean.

Minister for Housing, Planning, and Consumer Affairs, Felix Ellis, said the Tasmanian Government is a nation leader in delivering social housing maintenance, with satisfaction rates 8% higher than the national average.

“This significantly increased maintenance funding will deliver important upgrades and maintenance to social homes, including investing in energy efficiency,” Minister Ellis said.

“These upgrades include removing and replacing gas heating or older style electric panel heating with heat pumps and upgraded hot water systems to provide more sustainable energy options for tenants.

“We are charging ahead with the delivery of 10,000 social and affordable homes by 2032, with more than 150 social and affordable homes being delivered in the last 100 days alone.”

Parliamentary Secretary for Housing and Planning, Simon Behrakis, said this supercharged investment will also support Tasmanian jobs.

“These home improvements provide a pipeline of work for contractors, increasing employment opportunities and providing economic benefits to businesses around Tasmania,” Mr Behrakis said.

“Under our Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we committed to delivering more funding for social home maintenance and upgrades, and we are delivering it.

“By fulfilling that commitment, we’re ensuring that some of our most vulnerable Tasmanians are being provided the homes that they expect, and deserve.”
