The importance of our plan for Tasmanian Housing
An important part of the Tasmanian Government’s 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is to help more Tasmanians realise their home ownership dream.
Along with health and cost of living, it’s one of the key issues facing Tasmanians right now.
We cannot let Tassie become like Sydney – where it now takes over 15 years for average income earners to save for the average home.
Our children and their children deserve the opportunity to own their own home, just like generations before them.
Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future backs in Tasmanians aspiring towards home ownership and we’ve already delivered on key commitments like Stamping Out Stamp Duty.
Eligible Tasmanian first home buyers no longer have to pay a cent of stamp duty for any home valued up to $750,000.
That’s zero. Zip. Nothing.
This means a young family getting into the housing market can save up to $28,935.
Rather than spending years saving up for stamp duty bill (as well as your deposit), you can buy your own home sooner, use what you saved to get cracking on renovations, or set up the baby room.
Ultimately it’s your money.
This doubles our previous stamp duty discounts which have helped more than 8000 Tasmanians into their first home in the past six years.
Importantly, this policy applies to all eligible purchases since February 18 2024; if you’ve bought a house since this date, you’ll get your stamp duty returned.
We are also cutting stamp duty in half for all buyers of new or off-the-plan apartments and units up to $750,000.
And to provide more choice, we’re bringing more land and housing supply into the market, with new Housing Land Supply orders and more private affordable developments unlocked through Homes Tasmania.
We’re also expanding our successful MyHome Shared Equity Scheme which helps everyday Tasmanians own their own home with only a 2 per cent deposit. We’re increasing the equity available and lifting the income limits by 25 per cent, meaning more support for more first home buyers purchasing new builds or house and land packages.
Our Liberal Government wants more young Tasmanians to buy a home here, build a career here, and raise a family here.
And that’s exactly what our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future will do.
