Transformation of student accommodation set to begin

Work is just days away from beginning on the construction of new, modern student accommodation at TasTAFE’s Burnie campus.

Minister for Skills and Training, Felix Ellis, said VOS Construction has been appointed the tender for the $7 million project, with work set to begin in the coming days.

“This project will transform an existing building into 25 modern studio rooms, providing students with access to shared kitchen, laundry and common areas,” Minister Ellis said.

“Enhanced, modern, and purpose-built living facilities will ensure more Tasmanians can take up vocational learning and be supported to do so.”

This year there are 510 learners that reside more than 50km from the Burnie campus who are enrolled in courses across various industries including agriculture, construction, engineering, and health and community services.

Minister Ellis said the $7 million investment reflects the Tasmanian Liberal Government’s strong commitment to improving education access by placing the student at the centre.

“By offering on-campus accommodation, we’re supporting more Tasmanians to get on the tools and skilled up in their chosen field,” Minister Ellis said.

“With state-of-the-art facilities like the Freer Farm Centre of Excellence attracting students from far and wide, and the recent joint investment with the Australian Government for the Renewable Energy Centre of Excellence in Burnie, we’re ensuring students from across Tasmania can be supported to learn the skills they need to succeed.

“The investment in this project helps TasTAFE deliver a key part of its Reimaging TasTAFE – a 10-year Strategic Plan - putting learners at the centre by ensuring they have access to the training for the skills they need.

“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, the Tasmanian Liberal Government is delivering a job-ready generation of Tasmanians and investing in our people to future-proof our economy for years to come.”

The project is due to be completed before the end of the year.
