VET a Game Changer this National Skills Week

This National Skills Week (19-25 August) we celebrate a vocational education as a “Game Changer” for Tassie learners.

Minister for Skills and Training, Felix Ellis, said VET is game changing for our state, and life-changing for those students.

“I’ve always said you don’t need to go to university to have great opportunities in life, Minister Ellis said.

“National Skills Week is a great way to recognise the doors VET can open for Tasmanians, whether they are starting their career or taking the next step in their training.

“Tasmania punches well above its weight in vocational education, with nation-leading completions and very high levels of satisfaction for students undertaking training.

“This government is committed to ensuring a job-ready generation of young Tasmanians through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.

“Last year we saw almost 28,000 government-funded students go through VET, and they were supported with almost 7 million hours of government-funded training,” he said.

This year, National Skills Week has a particular emphasis in Launceston with several categories of the WorldSkills regional competitions (Barbering, Beauty Therapy and Hairdressing) taking place at TasTAFE’s Alanvale Campus.

Minister Ellis said the WorldSkills competitions were a great way for young Tasmanians to show off their talents and aim for selection in further competitions.

“Through events like WorldSkills and the annual Tasmanian Training Awards, we are seeing more and more Tasmanians turning to VET.

“WorldSkills promotes the great training options we have available right here in Tasmania, as well as giving participants the confidence to chase ongoing success in their chosen trade.

“I want to thank the TasTAFE team and all our Registered Training Organisation members who so often go above and beyond to support their students.”
